The Development of the Puerto Rican Jibaro and his Present Attitude Towards Society

Rosario, José C., The Development of the Puerto Rican Jibaro and his Present Attitude Towards Society, [Monographs of UPR Social Sciences, Series C, #1], Rio Piedras: University of Puerto Rico, 1935.

Cited in Popular Expression and National Identity in Puerto Rico, by Lillian Guerra.

From the Introduction:
Scope of the work – This monograph will comprise a study of the historical development of the jibaro of Puerto Rico, and a systematic description of his present day attitudes toward society.
The Method – For the first task, an investigation was made among the historical materials dealing with the subject, in the University of Chicago, and through this, in those of other universities in the United States. The latter were made available through the excellent system of interchange which has been established among the principal libraries of the country. In the study which I made of the present day jibaro, cabin after cabin was visited with the purpose of investigating his attitudes; patiently listening to the jibaro’s views on work and leisure, the family and religion, the governor of the island or the horse of the comisario. Extensive notes and records were made and are to be used.
