Some Important Caribbean Questions: A Summary of Interviews Conducted by... W.J.F. Kontak

Kontak, W.J.F., “Some Important Caribbean Questions: A Summary of Interviews Conducted by... W.J.F. Kontak”, 1963. (very fragile paper)

From the first page:
The following is a summary of interviews conducted in connection with important questions in the Caribbean about a year after the break-up of the federation attempt of 1958-1962. I lived in the West Indies for a year – from September 1, 1962 to September 1, 1963. I travelled in Trinidad, British Guiana, Grenada and St. Vincent at the end of February and beginning of March; and in Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Antigua, Martinique and St. Lucia in April. I interviewed upwards of eighty people, including politicians (government and opposition), civil servants, academics, labour leaders, businessmen, administrators, consuls and newspapermen.

Caribbean Review, Vol. VII, No. 2 (Journal)

Caribbean Review, Volume VII, (No. 2), April-June, 1978.

Available online.

From the 1st page:
Although dormant for a bit, Caribbean Review reawakens at a time when interest in the Caribbean and Latin America is booming. We hope to once again help satisfy that interest; that’s our part in the boom. The journal was founded in 1969 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Our files have been relocated, we type our lists elsewhere, our address has changed. We now count heavily on the intellectual resources of Florida International University rather than those of the University of Puerto Rico which we used to call upon so frequently.

Rough English translation:
The following summary includes 264 partially annotated references to recent books and journal literature in libraries of the Federal Republic of Germany and Berlin, as they were recorded in the catalogs of the documentation control center Latin America. The locations are each title recording indicated in the last line by Library Sigla whose resolution results from the list of shorthands. There is thus the possibility to see publications in the libraries or to have them arranged by a public library in library loan. In most of the libraries listed are photocopying facilities.

This study was published for the first time in the journal of the Institute of Caribbean Studies of the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras, Caribbean Studies (Vol. 10, No. 3, October 1970). Since then, Caribbean economic institutions have evolved. Going beyond the concept of mere free trade area and in order to strengthen their movement towards greater integration of the economies of their respective countries, the leaders of the twelve countries that formed the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) decided in the Bahamas in October 1972 to transform CARIFTA into a real Caribbean Economic Community.
Haiti should not stay out of this movement of integration of the Caribbean region.
