The following is a summary of interviews conducted in connection with important questions in the Caribbean about a year after the break-up of the federation attempt of 1958-1962. I lived in the West Indies for a year – from September 1, 1962 to September 1, 1963. I travelled in Trinidad, British Guiana, Grenada and St. Vincent at the end of February and beginning of March; and in Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Antigua, Martinique and St. Lucia in April. I interviewed upwards of eighty people, including politicians (government and opposition), civil servants, academics, labour leaders, businessmen, administrators, consuls and newspapermen.
