Vestigios Africanos en la Cultura del Pueblo Venezolano

Pollak-Eltz, Angelina, Vestigios Africanos en la Cultura del Pueblo Venezolano, Caracas: Universidad Católica “Andrés Bello”, Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas, 1972.

Reviewed in American Anthropologist © 1975.

Jamaica Joe: A Play in Three Acts

Cameron, Norman Eustace, Jamaica Joe: A Play in Three Acts, De Souza's Printery, 1962.

Extract from the Introduction:
In selecting as his theme for this play the sending of West Indians to relieve the Farm Labour Shortage in the U.S.A., the author would have preferred to use Guianese instead of Jamaican labour, in which case the title would have been Demerara Dan and not Jamaica Joe. However in 1946 we had not yet started sending Guianese farm labourers to the USA. The author was actually tempted to publish the play now under the title Demarara Dan with the necessary alterations. The time factor made this awkward: e.g. the reference to the Duke of Windsor, then Governor of the Bahamas, would have had to be omitted. The author has decided to let the play stand as the literary effort of a Guianese author in the year 1946. The sentiments expressed in the play are near enough to home, e.g., working towards self-government, deciding to return to one’s country and help build it or to remain in a foreign country and build oneself, insurance of crops against flood or drought.

Norman Eustace Cameron was born in New Amsterdam, Guyana. He attended Queen's CollegeQueen's College in Georgetown, and in 1921 won the Guyana Scholarship, achieving First Class Honours at the Oxford and Cambridge Higher Examination, with five distinctions in Latin, French, English, Mathematics and Religious Knowledge, placing him first among candidates from Barbados and Guyana. (...) On returning to Guyana he founded his own school, The Guyanese Academy (1926–1934), and wrote The Evolution of the Negro[1] in two volumes.

Las Falacias Económicas del Prof. Lewis & El Proceso Económico y el Cambio Cultural en Puerto Rico

Ross, David F., "Las falacias económicas del Prof. Lewis"& Lewis, Gordon K., “El proceso económico y el cambio cultural en Puerto Rico" (Contestación a David F. Ross), Revista La Torre, mimeografía, s.f.

Advertencia editorial:

San Jose: Subculture of a "Traditional" Coffee Municipality. Ph.D. dissertation. New York: Department of Anthropology, Columbia University.

Daal, Luis H., Kosecha di Maloa, Willemstad, Curaçao: G.C.T.

A History of Literature in the Caribbean: Cross-cultural studies, Volume 3, by Albert James Arnold, Julio Rodríguez-Luis, J. Michael Dash:
Given its relatively short life, Papiamentu is impressive for its range and the gamut of genres it has deployed. In the words of Luis H. Daal: “Papiament[u] arose, developed and arrived at its present point and stature in the short span of time of barely 200 years. The development came in some sort of whirlpool as a consequence whereof matters got an added momentum and events followed one another in an accelerated tempo: early publications, religious instructions in Papiament[u], non fiction and gradually a flourishing literature that has such feathers in its cap as books of poetry, novels, short stories, plays, essays on different subjects, magazines, translations from French, Dutch, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian, newspapers, radio, and since the last twenty years, television.” (Daal, [1983] 57) Even this positive account needs amendment, since it neglects the para-literary genres: political polemic, sex manuals, pedagogical and didactic texts often intended for use outside the classroom, and local histories. Accompanying this gamut of genres is an equally impressive variety of styles and registers – oral, literary and journalistic – in Papiamentu (Anderson, [1983] 82 - 83), by far the broadest of any Caribbean Creole, including prescriptive handbooks on radio and TV broadcast styles. Though no single factor underlies this diversity, the power and prestige of Papiamentu make it a prime reference point for other aspiring Creole literatures.

South America

Hanke, Lewis, South America, Princeton: Van Nostrand, 1959.

The “purpose” according to the Preface:
…to probe beneath what the eye sees and to find the fundamental problems which the Latin Americans themselves and students of this important world area believe to be the most urgent today. This volume aims to describe and analyze the social and economic realities in Brazil and Spanish South America; its companion volume in the Anvil Series makes the same approach to Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean countries. Both are prepared for students taking international affairs, U.S. diplomatic history, and modern Latin America, and also for the growing number of concerned and thoughtful persons who, in the United States and the hemisphere generally, are pondering the fate of their countries, and are aware that as citizens they must know more about the realities of other lands.

Struggle for the American Mediterranean: United States – European Rivalry in the Gulf – Caribbean 1776 - 1904

Langley, Lester D., Struggle for the American Mediterranean: United States – European Rivalry in the Gulf – Caribbean 1776 - 1904, Athens: University of Georgia Press, 1976.

Reviewed in The Florida Historical Quarterly © 1977.

From the book cover sleeve:
For nearly three centuries, the rich areas adjoining the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean have been the objects of intense and often violent competition among other nations. In this well documented study, Lester D. Langley traces the rivalry of the United States with several European nations for the control of this territory between the benchmark dates of 1776 … and 1904, when the United States instituted a protectorate system over the Dominican Republic, a system which symbolized the expansion and power of the United States in the Western hemisphere. In the epilogue of this intriguing chronicle, Mr. Langley further discusses the moral superiority the United States assumed in its dealings with the Caribbean world and the ingenuity it revealed in the form of policies that were curious blends of idealism and expediency.

...noticed by Thomas Mathews 43:2 (1963), 312: Guide to the Hispanic American Historical Review.

Oscar Handlin (September 29, 1915 in Brooklyn, New York – September 20, 2011 in Cambridge, Massachusetts)[1] was an American historian. As a professor of history at Harvard University for over 50 years, he directed 80 PhD dissertations and helped promote social and ethnic history. Handlin won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1952 with The Uprooted.[2][3] Handlin's 1965 testimony before Congress was said to "have played an important role" in abolishing a discriminatory immigration quota system in the U.S.
(…)
Handlin is viewed as one of the most prolific and influential American historians of the twentieth century. As an American historian and educator, he was noted for his in depth examination of American immigration history, ethnic history and social history. His dissertation (1941) was published as Boston’s Immigrants, 1790-1865: A Study in Acculturation. The book was highly regarded for its innovative research on sociological concepts and census data; in 1941, the book won the prestigious Dunning Prize from the American Historical Association as outstanding historical work published by a young scholar.

Preface
Prologue:
(excerpt) – Between the Conference and the publishing of this report certain events have happened in West Indian society which it would be stupid to ignore: they were not, of course, discussed at the conference. (…) The dissolution of the Federation was not in fact envisaged by those taking part; on the contrary from the opening speech by Dr. Sherlock, right throughout the deliberations all had it in mind that we would be carrying on our respective educational endeavors within the political framework of Federation even though we would also serve a larger area including British Guiana, The Bahamas and British Honduras. This breaking up of the Federation is the first of the three events referred to above. The other two are the achieving of independence by Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica.

Nederland en Latijns-Amerika

de Jong , Theo Petrus Maria, Nederland en Latijns-Amerika, Overdruk uit Economisch - Historisch Jaarboek, 29e deel, 1963.

From the Foreword:

Google translation:
In more ways than one exhibits the complex of problems, which here simply referred to as "Latin America 1820", an interesting analogy, including differences, with essential questions of our day. Analogy and difference. As to the first, the decolonization forces itself forward after the great European wars around the turn of the century. But this analogy is most prominent in the light of the actions of the new states themselves. The political objectives dominate in the first instance over the economic. The "new states" in rebellion seek political recognition, their mutual quarrels, join together and fall apart again. Prosperity is extremely small, the least corruption racing as big as the aspirations and expectations of the rebel leaders. The political instability is also now a brake on the activities undertaken. The differences are obvious. The European countries are still at the beginning of their huge technical and economic development. The century of the "bourgeois Conquerant" has just begun. The world has not yet been fully distributed, decolonization is not a world movement. In the European world cherishes here and there large economic expectations of the new states, not least for its own development. The contrast between the economically developed and underdeveloped countries do not as a moral issue for. Nationalization and expropriation widely are no repulsive forces, one strives to obtain economic privileges. It is the influence of Britain, expressed in its economic strength and political power based thereon, which is of great significance, and here it is still a start.
