(excerpt) – Between the Conference and the publishing of this report certain events have happened in West Indian society which it would be stupid to ignore: they were not, of course, discussed at the conference. (…) The dissolution of the Federation was not in fact envisaged by those taking part; on the contrary from the opening speech by Dr. Sherlock, right throughout the deliberations all had it in mind that we would be carrying on our respective educational endeavors within the political framework of Federation even though we would also serve a larger area including British Guiana, The Bahamas and British Honduras. This breaking up of the Federation is the first of the three events referred to above. The other two are the achieving of independence by Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica.
