Cambionan Social Cu Un Yiu Di Tera Ta Sonja Cune Den E Partinan Igual Di E Reinado Nobo

Nita, Amador Paulo, Cambionan Social Cu Un Yiu Di Tera Ta Sonja Cune Den E Partinan Igual Di E Reinado Nobo, Curaçao: Curaçaosche Courant, N.V.

Prólogo:
E gloria di e potencia colonialnan a topa e mesun destino cu esun di Hitler cual a keda dera bao di e ruinanan di Berlin. “Biba autonomia! Nos ta liber”, asina pueblo tabata grita tur caminda cu bo pasa. Pero pronto a bini na cla cu ta Hulandesnan Europeo mes a keda cu tur cos di bisa riba “Isla” y tur otro caminda. Comercio ta casi completamente den man di estranheronan.

Translation, using Glosbe:
The glory of the colonial powers met the same fate as that of Hitler who was buried under the ruins of Berlin. In India, passive resistance arose against British rule, while in Indonesia the people rose up by armed force against Dutch authority. In Antilles and Surinam the people followed a further system of evolution by which our representatives took part in various Round Table conferences in The Hague. The goal of these Round Table conferences was to create a new kingdom in which all parties would have equal rights. The ministers with responsibility in the Dutch government, provided they are of good faith, can, by signing a single signature, declare both Surinam and Antilles equal parts of the New Kingdom. But the question remains: will the ideal of the European-born Dutch worker, or rather the ideal of the Antilles worker, to achieve equal wages and social provisions as the European Dutch, also be realized? In both Surinam and Antilles there prevails the general opinion that the idea of Union and Cooperation in the Kingdom cannot find its origin in the dead letters of some formula of law at the Round Table Conference alone. The change of the Constitution of Curaçao in 1937 also gave rise to the hope of a better understanding between the native people of Antilles and the European Dutch. When the Interim Arrangement came into force, flags were raised on all corners. “Live independence! We are free”, so people shouted everywhere you passed. But it soon became clear that it was the European Dutch who had everything to say about the “island” and elsewhere. Trade is almost entirely in the hands of foreigners. Many of them have come to Antilles a few years ago like poor rats and now they have been elevated to the position of powerful groups in our community. The relationship between the Dutch Europeans and the children of the land who work at C.P.I.M. can be compared to that of a teacher and his dog. In the following chapters I will try to prove that for the realization of the social changes that the children of the earth dream of in the united parts of the New Kingdom, it is absolutely necessary for the European Dutch living here and the large Dutch companies, to put an end to the Dutch privilege of European over the children of the earth.

Slave and Citizen: The Negro in the Americas

Tannenbaum, Frank, Slave and Citizen: The Negro in the Americas, New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1947.

Reviewed in The New York Review of Books.

Reviewed in The American Historical Review © 1947.

See also Google Books.

From the book-cover:
In this compact and illuminating book Frank Tannenbaum, …, makes a mature and penetrating examination of attitudes toward the Negro in the Americas. By the evidence of history he contrasts the position of those parts of America settled largely from Great Britain, France and Holland with those parts settled largely from Spain and Portugal. He demonstrates that the national history and religious backgrounds of the European home communities strongly affected attitudes toward slaves and slavery in the New World. In the course of this illuminating discussion much light is thrown on present-day moral and legal aspects of the race problem in the United States and in Latin America.

La Piedra de Tropiezo

van Leeuwen, Boeli, La piedra de tropiezo, Mexico: Joaquín Mortiz, 1964.

Reviewed in Scholieren.com.

Willem Cornelis Jacobus (Boeli) van Leeuwen:
He was a son of Pieter Hendrik van Leeuwen, district master in Curacao, then Governor of Bonaire and later Governor of the Windward Islands. (...) As a writer, he debuted in 1959 with the novel De rots der struikeling for which he received in 1961 the Vijverberg Prize (now Ferdinand Bordewijk Prize). Within this work life plays an important role in Curaçao. This is often linked to major biblical themes about guilt, sexuality and responsibility. The paradoxes between individual and social environment are thus expressed.

Guide to the Sources in the Netherlands for the History of Latin America

Roessingh, M.P.H., Guide to the Sources in the Netherlands for the History of Latin America, The Hague: Government Pub. Office, 1968.

Reviewed in The Hispanic American Historical Review © 1969.

This guide provides a survey of the sources (documents, manuscripts, maps and topographical reproductions) in the Netherlands for the history of Latin America. The area dealt with covers all of Central and South America together with the islands belonging to the relative countries, the southern states of the United States up to the time they joined the Union, and the Philippines. The period dealt with is from the discovery of America up to 1914, or, as regards the Philippines and Puerto Rico, to 1898. In certain cases the terminus ante quem has been shifted nearer the present day, for example, if an archive or collections contains important documents from both before and after 1914 or a consecutive series of correspondence, etc, continues beyond 1914 and 1898 respectively.
The guide is subdivided according to the organization of the Dutch archives. This means that the most important repository for the purposes of the guide, the General State Archives, is dealt with first of all. The logical consequence is, therefore, that a number of archives deposited there are dealt with in the sequence laid down in the Survey 1953 (bibl. 23). The sequence of repositories of state archives is also in accordance with this Survey. Thereafter the municipal archives are dealt with in alphabetical order according to place-name. Chapter I also contains a list of certain departmental archives that have not been transferred. Chapter II deals with the archives of non-governmental institutions, which have been grouped systematically as far as possible. In Chapter III the libraries, museums and institutions which contain records relevant to this guide are dealt with alphabetically according to their location. Collections of maps of institutions already dealt with and of others are given in Chapter IV. Chapter V contains a brief communication on family archives and privately owned collections.

Córdova-Bello, Eleazar, Compañías Holandesas de Navegación: Agentes de la Colonización Neerlandesa, Sevilla: Escuela de Estudios Hispano Americanos, 1964.

Scientific Commons:

The Two Variants in Caribbean Race Relations

Hoetink, Harmannus, The Two Variants in Caribbean Race Relations: A Contribution to the Sociology of Segmented Societies, London, New York and Toronto: Institute of Race Relations, 1967. [Second copy with author's dedication: "To Tom, To serve as a token of great esteem and friendship. January 1970"]

Reviewed in Comparative Politics © 1972.

See also Ethnicity in the Caribbean: essays in honor of Harry Hoetink by Gert Oostindie.

From the book cover:
In this study, translated from the Dutch, of the segmented societies of the Caribbean (in which are here included the Southern States of the USA), Dr. Hoetink distinguishes two variants: the Iberian or Latin, in those parts of the area colonized by Spain or Portugal; and the North-West European, in the areas where the colonial power was British, French or Dutch. He gives much attention to the difficulties, for the metropolitan outsider, of achieving objectivity in studies such as these. Dr. Hoetink discusses the origins, 'racial' and cultural, of these segmented societies, social mobility - or the lack of it - within them, and the psychological issues involved. Ultimately he sees the world as itself similarly segmented, with all the problems and possibilities inherent in a segmented society.

De West-Indische Compagnie

Menkman, W. R., De West-Indische Compagnie, Amsterdam: P.N. Van Kampen & Zoon N.V., 1947. From the Foreword:
Dutch West India Company (Dutch: Geoctroyeerde Westindische Compagnie or GWIC; English: Chartered West India Company) was a chartered company (known as the "GWC") of Dutch merchants. Among its founding fathers was Willem Usselincx (1567-1647?). On June 2, 1621, it was granted a charter for a trade monopoly in the West Indies (meaning the Caribbean) by the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands and given jurisdiction over the African slave trade, Brazil, the Caribbean, and North America.
