Surendra Bhana was born in India in 1939 and moved to south Africa in 1948. He holds degrees from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and the University of South Africa, Pretoria. He received the MA and PhD from the University of Kansas, where he won the George L. Anderson Award for Excellence in History. He is presently a lecturer in the Department of History at the University of Durban-Westville in South Africa.
