From the cover:
Covering the period from 1940 to the 1964 elections, this work has the special distinction of viewing the political structure of Puerto Rico through its own party system, rather than, as is customary, through its relationship with the United States. The author first presents a general survey of the context – social, economic, legal and historical – of the party system. He then analyzes the shifting pattern of leadership and ideology in the three principal parties of the period, and describes the internal organization of the parties, with special reference to party discipline, finance, the nominating process, and legislative organization and behavior. The book concludes with a general critique of the peculiar dilemmas that confront political actors in Puerto Rico.
