The first part of the paper is devoted to a description of the social, economic and political life of the region. The description is made in such a manner as to facilitate judgements on the basic problems of the region. In the second part, the past, present and possible roles of the Christian churches of the region are assessed in terms of participation in the social process. The final part of the paper is devoted to a consideration of the contribution that the churches make to the society in formation in the Caribbean.
