Since 1969 Arvin Murch has been Assistant professor of Sociology at Duke University. After receiving his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Yale, he taught at Yale, Berkeley and Cornell. He has worked in a variety of research projects and the present volume is the outgrowth of field study in the French Antilles.
