Memorandum for Governor Winship

Typewritten document, titled: Memorandum for Governor Winship, dated August 14, 1934.

Extract:
To sum up. Most of what might have been transferred to Washington from the old Spanish executive and judicial archives and records was destroyed by the fire in 1926. What is left is under the Historical Archivist and consists, according to his reports, of about 140 bundles of classified files of varying interest and some old account books and registries. The archivist also reports that there is a large number of bundles belonging to the abolished Audiencia Territorial or Highest Insular Court under the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico, among which there may be records of political and historical interest. The cession made by Spain of her sovereignty in this Island under Article VIII of the Treaty of Paris included also all documents exclusively referring to the sovereignty ceded that might exist in the archives of the Peninsula, the Article further providing that where any documents in such archives related only in part to said sovereignty, a copy of such part would be furnished upon request. So far as is known, documents relating exclusively to the ceded sovereignty of Spain over Puerto Rico existing in the archives of the Peninsula have not been received in this Island or anywhere else.
