La New York & Bermúdez Company con sus oficinas centrales ubicadas en la ciudad de Filadelfia fue una de las primeras empresas que operó el negocio de los hidrocarburos en Venezuela junto con la empresa venezolana Petrolia de Táchira. La historia de esta empresa en Venezuela inicia el 16 de noviembre de 1885 cuando Horacio R. Hamilton y Jorge A. Phillips traspasan a la New York & Bermúdez Company; subsidiaria de la General Asphalt, la concesión sobre el Lago de Guanoco que habían recibido del gobierno nacional el 7 de mayo de 1883 para explotar y comercializar el asfalto de dicho lago. Las relaciones de esta empresa con el estado venezolano se caracterizaran en el período en que operó en el país (1885-1934) por una serie de enfrentamientos jurídicos y políticos y en particular contra el gobierno de presidente Cipriano Castro.

The New York & Bermúdez Company with its central offices located in the city of Philadelphia was one of the first companies that operated the hydrocarbons business in Venezuela together with the Venezuelan company Petrolia de Táchira. The history of this company started in Venezuela on November 16, 1885 when Horacio R. Hamilton and Jorge A. Phillips transferred to the New York & Bermúdez Company the subsidiary of General Asphalt, the concession over the Lake of Guanoco that they had received from the national government on the 7th May 1883 to exploit and market the asphalt of said lake. The relations of this company with the Venezuelan state were characterized in the period in which it operated in the country (1885-1934) by a series of legal and political confrontations and in particular against the government of President Cipriano Castro.
