From the Foreword by the author (former US ambassador to the Dominican Republic):
In the spring of 1965, violent events forced the Dominican Republic upon the attention of the American people. What ensued called into question our entire foreign policy. The book, however, is not just about the Dominican Civil War of 1965. All commentators agree that behind that bloody episode lay deep-rooted conflicts that had wracked the Republic even before the time of the dictator Trujillo. This book is about those conflicts, as I saw them from inside the Embassy.
