From the Preface:
In this book Professor Nettleford sets out to analyze and show the dynamics of cultural development in our Caribbean. And he is excellently equipped for the task. Firstly, as an intellectual who has given at least a decade’s serious thought to the matter, he focuses on our problems of identity, particularly on “cultural pluralism” and the evils of Eurocentricity. This impressive sweep is underpinned with references to all the relevant texts, including unpublished material. Secondly, as a successfully practicing artist, he brings both knowledge and sensitivity to the consideration of the role the performing arts have played in the overall development of Jamaica and the Caribbean and the increasing social thrust now required of them.
