The research for this study was carried out in the United States, France and Algeria, and it is based largely on works written by and about Frantz Fanon, on interviews held with members of his family and with friends and political associates, and on a part of the massive literature devoted to the Algerian Revolution. Without the help of numerous Algerians, both friends and officials, and I include residents of Algeria among them, there is little doubt that I would have learned considerably less and seen less of the people and places that were important to this study. There is a good deal left undone, though, notably a meeting with Mrs. Josie Fanon, who, in spite of attempts to meet, made it clear that she had had a surfeit of Fanon followers. More accessible were Mr. and Mrs. Joby Fanon, Dr. and Mrs. Françoise Tosquelles, Maître Marcel Manville, and the journalists, writers, and friends who made these and other interviews possible and who were often themselves valuable sources of information.

A manera de Prólogo:

Breves palabras en justificación del tema. Motiva esta monografía la distinta apreciación que de un mismo evento de nuestro pasado colonial hiciera el doctor Vidal Morales y Morales, historiógrafo cubano de positivo valer. El fue quien primero hurgó en los archivos de la Isla compulsando datos, acotando citas, e interpretando el verdadero sentido de los documentos. Como fruto de su tesonera labor intelectual pudo ofrecer libros de obligada consulta al investigador perspicaz de la ciencia histórica. Sin embargo, en el breve lapso de tres años comenta, de modo diverso, el propósito perseguido con el intento de erección de una Junta Superior de Gobierno, por las personas representativas de La Habana, a fines de julio de 1808.

En un sesudo articulo, inserto en la revista El Fígaro a raíz de la instalación del régimen autonómico en Cuba, Vidal Morales sustenta el criterio de que el proyecto de Junta provincial “no era otro que el establecimiento de un gobierno autonómico”; y concreta, a continuación, sus rasgos esenciales. Poco después, en 1901, al publicar su obra mas trascendente, con el sugestivo titulo Iniciadores y Primeros Mártires de la Revolución Cubana, quizás al calor de la nueva época política del país, dijo de aquel conato de Junta o Cámara de Notables “que probablemente hubiera dado por resultado la independencia de esta Isla”.

La primera tesis acoge, en verdad, el pensamiento de los dirigentes políticos de La Habana que idearon esa asamblea comunal con la más pura intención de fidelidad a la Metrópoli española. El ultimo parecer concuerda, en cambio, con sus obcecados opositores, los que calificaron como “tiránica e independiente” la frustrada Junta, para así denigrar el orden publico de la Colonia a los autores de la iniciativa progresista. A dilucidar el proceso evolutivo y finalidad real que animaba a los promotores de esa asamblea de patricios en la Habana, durante aquellos días cruciales de la gobernación política y económica insular, tiende este modesto ensayo.

It is an account and an interpretation of Bolivar in the light of the large number of documents which have been printed since the last English biography was written in 1910. (…) I have tried particularly to bring out the importance of Bolivar’s political theories, because they distinguish him from all other liberators. A chronological arrangement has been chosen; and though, by this method, military campaigns and romantic constitutions follow one another in an order which may well seem bewildering, an attempt to segregate political theory in one chapter, strategy and tactics in another and revolutionary politics in a third would have created an impression almost entirely fictitious. The thoughts and actions of Bolivar’s life are only intelligible when taken together at the same time.

Victor Schoelcher (22 July 1804, Paris - 25 December 1893, Houilles) was a French abolitionist writer in the 19th century and the main spokesman for a group from Paris who worked for the abolition of slavery, and formed an abolition society in 1834. He worked especially hard for the abolition of slavery on the Caribbean islands. (...) He was responsible for the publication of many articles regarding slavery between 1833 and 1847 in which he focused on positive aspects of abolishing slavery. Schoelcher was also intent on social, economic, and political changes being made in the Caribbean colonies. He thought that the production of sugar should continue in the colonies but large central factories should be constructed rather than using slave labor. Schoelcher was the first European abolitionist to visit Haiti and had a large influence on the abolitionist movements in all of the French West Indies.

The history of nations, or of the times in which they flourished, does not interest, simply by showing the degree of power and culture to which they attained, and the means by which they were able to subjugate or aggrandize those who were ruled; but also, by instructing us in the progressive steps of commerce, arts, and sciences; those mighty agents which enlarge the understanding, develop the riches of nature, remove obstacles, and prepare a people for the enjoyment of rational liberty. The code which governed the ancient Peruvian nation, dictated by its founder, Manco-Capac, and amplified by his successors, laid the foundations of that public happiness, of which for some centuries his descendants have been deprived: but it was not the basis of that political liberty which moves men, inspires great thoughts, diffuses light, and enlarges the limits of human knowledge. Walter Adolphe Roberts, historian, poet novelist, journalist and patriot was born 1886 in Kingston, Jamaica. He was the son of Adolphus Roberts a clergyman Curate of the Kingston Parish Church, Chaplain at Port Royal and Rector at Luidas Vale. His mother Josephine Fannie (nee Napier), was of French ancestry. Walter Adolphe spent his early years at his home near Mandeville, Manchester where he received his early education. During a trip to the Lesser Antilles in the summer of 1887, the writer of the following pages, landing at Martinique, fell under the influence of that singular spell which the island has always exercised upon strangers, and by which it has earned its poetic name,—Le Pays des Revenants. Even as many another before him, he left its charmed shores only to know himself haunted by that irresistible regret,—unlike any other,—which is the enchantment of the land upon all who wander away from it. So he returned, intending to remain some months; but the bewitchment prevailed, and he remained two years.

Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (27 June 1850 – 26 September 1904), known also by the Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo, was an international writer, known best for his books about Japan, especially his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories, such as Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things. In the United States, Hearn is also known for his writings about the city of New Orleans based on his 10-year stay in that city. (…) Hearn's writings for the New Orleans newspapers included impressionistic descriptions of places and characters and many stern, vigorous editorials denouncing political corruption, street crime, violence, intolerance, and the failures of public health and hygiene officials. Despite the fact that he is credited with "inventing" New Orleans as an exotic and mysterious place, his obituaries of the vodou leaders Marie Laveau and Doctor John Montenet are matter-of-fact and debunking. A selection of Hearn's writings were collected in S. Fredrick Starr's book Inventing New Orleans: Writings of Lafcadio Hearn, published by the University Press of Mississippi.[2] Harper's sent Hearn to the West Indies as a correspondent in 1887. He spent two years in Martinique and produced two books: Two Years in the French West Indies and Youma, The Story of a West-Indian Slave, both in 1890.

Colombian educator and historian German Arciniegas (1900 - 1999) was a noted intellectual and journalist whose criticism of Latin-American dictators forced him to live in exile in the United States for almost two decades beginning in the 1940s. Educator, historian, and civil servant German Arciniegas represented his native Colombia as ambassador to several countries, while also serving in the Colombian Ministry of Education and as a member of the Colombian Parliament for three terms. The author of 1986's America in Europe: A History of the New World in Reverse and many other books, he promoted a non-Eurocentric view of world history in which the Americas played a positive role. Arciniegas also became a noted journalist and lived abroad from 1942 through 1960 because of his strong criticism of the military dictatorships then in power throughout Latin America. Arciniegas was born in a rural area near Bogota, Colombia, on December 6, 1900, to dairy owners Rafael and Aurora (Angueyra) Arciniegas, and as a child he developed a great love for the countryside. He came from a long line of political agitators: his great grandfather, Pedro Figueredo, was executed by Spanish officials for leading a rebel Cuban force and penning that country's national anthem, "La Bayamesa."

The official instructions recommend "link, where possible, national history to local history so rich and varied.” (…) Of our first contacts with the schools in the Caribbean, we think that this story should be known, not only by educated men, but also by the great mass of young West Indians who do not perform at primary school or complementary [levels]. Este informe que presenta Cordero Michel, sobre la era de Trujillo, es una publicación del año 1959, dos años antes de que callera el régimen de terror y opresión que marcó a la República Dominicana desde 1930 hasta 1961. Dicho documento está dividido en tres partes, a saber:
• Primera parte: Situación política. En la que se nos hace un esbozo del fundamento tanto constitucional como jerárquico y organizacional del régimen trujillista.
• Segunda parte: Situación Económica. Se nos presenta el panorama económico durante la tiranía, haciendo un análisis sistemático de las principales fuentes de producción de la República Dominicana en aquél entonces, como también de la desigual repartición de la economía
• Tercera parte: Situación Cultural. Se hace en esta última parte un análisis de las estructuras del sistema de enseñanza, dejando entre ver las debilidades y fortalezas del mismo de una manera objetiva y analítica.

José R. Cordero Michel nació el 7 de enero de 1931 en Santiago de los Caballeros, Republica Dominicana. Estudió en la … (UASD) en la que obtuvo, en 1953, el titulo de Doctor en Derecho. En dicho año abandonó el país e ingresó en la Universidad de Wisconsin, EE.UU., en la que tomó cursos especializados de Economía y Seguros hasta finales de 1954. Vivió en Escocia e Inglaterra de 1954 a 1956 realizando estudios de Economía, Seguros y Sociología en las Universidades de Perth y de Londres. De ahí marchó a Francia y estudió en la Universidad La Sorbonne, de Paris, en la que recibió el Doctorado en Ciencias Económicas en noviembre de 1958. A comienzos de 1959 fue invitado por la Universidad de Puerto Rico a dictar un ciclo de conferencias acerca de la situación económica, política y social del Caribe, en particular de la Republica Dominicana, y a ingresar al cuerpo docente de su Departamento de Ciencias Políticas. Desde Puerto Rico, desestimando las prometedoras ofertas académicas que se le ofrecían, se traslado a Cuba para enrolarse al glorioso Ejercito de Liberacion Dominicana que el 14 de junio de 1959, se lanzo a la lucha armada contra la tiranía de Trujillo en Constanza, Maimón y Estero Hondo.

Durante largos años June Rosenberg ha dedicado la mayor parte de su tiempo a la investigación antropológica participante. Se diría que para ella es imposible escribir “desde fuera” del proceso que estudia… Este formidable libro recoge y estudia una fase desconocida de la cultura de los dominicanos: el culto denominado Gagá, el cual rescata la profesora Rosenberg, ubicándolo en el contexto religioso y social que le corresponde, no sin antes demostrar que el mismo no ha sido jamás una expresión folklórica, ni carnavalesca, como se creen muchos investigadores y curiosos. El Gagá, cuya manifestación pública más elocuente es su expresión por las celebraciones de semana santa, es todo un conjunto de relaciones socio-religiosas que opera desde un contexto social rural, ligado al ingenio y a la caña de azúcar. El Gagá es una especie de salvoconducto para seres que solo pueden arribar al "prestigio" mediante una organización en la que predominan los contactos con el mundo de los espíritus, los guedés, los luá, los seres del ritual radá y del ritual petró. En el fondo, el gagá, es una joya de la transculturación afroamericana en primer término, y domínico-haitiana en segundo término.

El licenciado Luis F. Mejía nació en 1892 en Santo Domingo, donde ejerció el derecho y fue diputado por la provincia Duarte. Fue perseguido tenazmente por la dictadura trujillista por su oposición al régimen, situación que lo llevó al exilio. Mejía participó en la expedición de Cayo Confites, en 1947, por lo cual fue condenado por un tribunal dominicano a 30 años de cárcel, la pena máxima en nuestro país. Otros 30 años de cárcel también les fueron impuestos por su apoyo a las expediciones de 1959. El autor “De Lilís a Trujillo” dedicó su vida a la lucha por la liberación y el bienestar de la patria. En 1961 regresó y restableció lazos con su país, pero tras la muerte de su esposa, se retiró a Venezuela, donde falleció en 1971.

La Batalla de Las Carreras fue una de las grandes batallas durante los años posteriores a la Guerra de la Independencia Dominicana y se libró el 21 de abril de 1849, cerca de Baní, provincia Peravia. Una fuerza de tropas dominicanas, una parte del ejército del sur, dirigida por el general Pedro Santana, derrotó a una fuerza del ejército haitiano que superaba en número al dominicano, encabezado por el emperador Faustin Soulouque.

Presidente de República Dominicana desde el 1 de septiembre de 1882 al 29 de enero de 1883, desde el 6 de enero al 27 de febrero de 1887 y nuevamente desde el 30 de abril de 1889 hasta su asesinato en 1899. Su forma de gobierno dictatorial condujo al país a la bancarrota, situación que provocaría una fuerte inestabilidad política y seria la causa principal de la posterior intervención norteamericana de 1916.

La provincia de Pedernales, situada en el extremo sur-occidental de la República Dominicana, haciendo frontera con el vecino país de Haití, presenta varias ocupaciones pre cerámicas importantes y una de características ceramista o agrícola. Estas ocupaciones son importantes porque complementan la arqueología dominicana de una zona apenas estudiada, y dan oportunidad de establecer la aparición de un complejo de yacimientos con sílex como materia prima similares a los del área de Barrera Mordan, en la provincia de Azua, República Dominicana. Los estudios de la provincia de Pedernales se pueden dividir en dos grandes áreas de ocupación: la de habitantes pre-agrícolas ligados a la zona de rio y caverna, y la de agricultores relacionados con una alta zona de meseta en donde están presentes numerosos montículos agrícolas.

Galíndez, deriva así de un episodio real, de la desaparición en 1956 de Jesús de Galíndez, representante del Gobierno vasco en el exilio ante el Departamento de Estado norteamericano, y su secuestro, tortura, y asesinato en la Republica Dominicana por orden, y tal vez en presencia, de Rafael L. Trujillo, que había colaborado económicamente en las campañas electorales americanas en favor de los anticomunistas Richard Nixon (vicepresidente de Eisenhower) o del famoso senador Joseph McCarthy [6], hizo desaparecer a todos los testigos de ese suceso,7 incluido a Gerald Lester Murphy, piloto americano de la avioneta que engañado trasladó a Galíndez de vuelta a la República Dominicana, el cual tenía relación con un Senador estadounidense que junto con el "The New York Times" presionaron para el esclarecimiento de los hechos. Este caso le creo a Trujillo una imagen desfavorable a la opinión pública estadounidenses y contribuyó en cierta medida el deterioro sus relaciones con los Estados Unidos. Trujillo sería posteriormente asesinado el 30 de mayo de 1961 por el hermano de una de sus víctimas. [7]

Bonsal admitted that "animosity was inevitable", but he was hopeful that "at some point we can get down to a reasoned dialogue".[3] Castro was critical of the arrival of Bonsal in the Cuban press comparing him to a colonial Viceroy,[4] and dialogue was not easily forthcoming.

Se formó como antropólogo en la Universidad de São Paulo (1946), dedicando los primeros años de su carrera profesional al estudio de los indígenas brasileños (hasta entonces, bastante desconocidos). Adquirió prestigio trabajando como consultor sobre dicho tema para la Unesco y la OIT. En los años siguientes fundó la Universidad de Brasilia, de la que fue su primer Rector. Fue ministro de Educación en el fugaz Gobierno parlamentario de Hermes Lima (1962-1963). Posteriormente fue nombrado ministro de la Casa Civil del presidente varguista João Goulart. Brathwaite’s The Development of Creole Society in Jamaica is, by his own description, a “historical study with a socio-cultural emphasis” (xiv) and, one as such, with decisive implications for understanding Caribbean society as a whole in the twentieth society. His thesis here is that the
people, mainly from Britain and West Africa, who settled, lived, worked and were born in Jamaica, contributed to the formation of a society . . . which, in so far as it was neither purely British nor West African, is . . . creole. (xiii)
The term ‘creole’ as used by Brathwaite denotes, when applied to persons, both whites and blacks, freeborn and slave, “born in, native to, committed to the area of living” (xv). When applied to the general society, it denotes both a colonial relationship with a “metropolitan European power, on the one hand, and a plantation arrangement on the other” (xv). Creole Jamaica, Brathwaite is explicit, was a society in which there was a “juxtaposition of master and slave, élite and labourer, in a culturally heterogeneous relationship” (xvi). Although “multi-racial” (xv), it was “organised from the benefit of a minority of European origin” (xv).

Lee Bosence was born in 1909 in Battersea, London, one of eight children. At the beginning of the First World War her mother took the two youngest children to Whyteleaf in Surrey, which was then a very rural area. A sense of freedom and a love of wildlife which was established in her childhood were to become the driving influences of her life. She graduated in English and Psychology at Bedford College in Regent spark, London. In 1937, after periods of teaching in both France and England she came to work at Summerhill School in Leiston. Here she met Paxton `Chad' Chadwick (see separate entry), who was teaching art. Lee then joined the Communist Party in 1937. (...) Chad worked as a wildlife illustrator for Penguin books. After Chad died in 1961, Cassell, the publisher, invited Lee to complete the Pantoscope series of educational paperbacks he had begun. Her research into aspects of fishing and fruit industries gave her the confidence to begin her own literary career. Euclides da Cunha (January 20, 1866 – August 15, 1909) was a Brazilian writer, sociologist and engineer. His most important work is Os Sertões (Rebellion in the Backlands), a non-fictional account of the military expeditions promoted by the Brazilian government against the rebellious village of Canudos, known as the War of Canudos. This book was a favorite of Robert Lowell, who put it above Tolstoy, the Russian writer. Jorge Luis Borges also commented on it in his short story "Three Versions of Judas".

It was submitted as a dissertation to the Graduate School of the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, in partial fulfillment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History. A summary of the dissertation was published in the Abstracts of Doctoral Dissertations for 1949, The Ohio State University Press. The reader, who is only superficially familiar with Caribbean affairs may find the materials of this volume strange. The extent to which violence, both open and covert, is a constant factor in the life of the region may cause surprise. The incongruous and rather unreal quality of many events, whether fanciful or farcical in appearance, may also prove unexpected. If the reader is inclined to doubt the authenticity of certain events, viewing them as too implausible o be true, he may be assured that many things even more strange, which are possibly and even probably true, have been omitted because their accuracy could not be satisfactorily established. Nothing is included here that does not come from sources considered sound. Nothing is included that has not been subjected to every possible verification.

As a young attorney, Mr. Crassweller engaged in the private practice of law in Duluth and then moved to Washington, D.C. in 1943 to work for the State Department's Division of World Trade Intelligence. Following the war, he returned to Duluth to resume the private practice of law. From 1951 to 1953, he participated in a mining venture in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. In 1954, he became counsel for Pam American World Airways in New York City; he remained at Pan Am until 1966. From 1967 to 1969 he served as a Visiting Fellow on the Council of Foreign Relations in New York City, and he testified as an expert witness before the Committee on Foreign Affairs, United States House of Representatives, in Washington D.C. In 1970-1971, he was a Visiting Professor at both Sarah Lawrence College and Brooklyn College. During the latter part of his career, he worked for International Telephone and Telegraph, where he rose to become General Counsel for ITT Latin America. Over a 16 year period, Mr. Crassweller reviewed some 700 books for Foreign Affairs, the magazine of the Council on Foreign Relations; he was also a reviewer for the New York Times book section. Preceding chapters have dealt with the general nature of problems confronting mass resettlement of the distressed and impoverished refugees of Europe. The major elements of Dominican economy have been described in some detail, as well as the climate, demography, land resources, soils, crops, and the agricultural and industrial potentialities.

Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring (La Habana, 1889-1964), incansable historiador y promotor cultural, fue nombrado el primero de julio de 1935 Historiador de la Ciudad de La Habana y la Oficina se organizó tres ańos después. Fue autor de libros y folletos, además de editor de diversos volúmenes, entre ellos de la primera edición cubana de "La Edad de Oro" (1932), precedida de su estudio "Martí y los niños". A partir de 1935 comienza a publicar "obras claras, sencillas y de distribución gratuita sobre temas históricos diversos": los "Cuadernos de Historia Habanera", que aparecen ininterrumpidamente hasta 1962. En 1959 publica "El antimperialismo de Don Francisco Henríquez y Carvajal"; "Los Estados Unidos contra Cuba Libre"; "Males y vicios de Cuba republicana, sus causas y su remedio", y "Máximo Gómez, el libertador de Cuba y el primer ciudadano de la República". En 1960 ven la luz: "Hostilidad permanente de los Estados Unidos contra la independencia de Cuba"; "El presidente McKinley y el gobernador Wood, máximos enemigos de Cuba Libre" y "Los Estados Unidos contra Cuba republicana".

Don Francisco Henríquez y Carvajal, nació en la ciudad de Santo Domingo el 14 de enero de 1859, cuando la primera República Dominicana se defendía inútilmente de la amenaza haitiana y continuas intervenciones de potencias extranjeras. (...) Dentro de las más destacadas misiones políticas, económicas y científicas desempeñadas en la vida del doctor se destacan:

- Fundó en 1880 junto a José Pantaleón Castillo la Escuela Preparatoria, ajustada a los modernos métodos pedagógicos dentro del plan general de la organización de la enseñanza, desarrollada por el sabio maestro Enrique María de Hostos, de quien fue un gran amigo.

- Secretario de la Presidencia de su País entre 1880 – 1882.

- Miembro de la Delegación Dominicana a la Exposición Universal de París en 1889.

- Delegado al Congreso de Americanistas en París en 1890.

- Ingresó como Catedrático de Medicina en el Instituto Profesional de Santo Domingo en 1895.

- Ocupó cargos de Ministros de Estado de relaciones Exteriores y de Estado de Correos de la República Dominicana entre 1899 – 1902.

- Nombrado Jefe de la Delegación Dominicana a la II Conferencia de la Paz, en La Haya, en 1907.

- Agente Fiscal del Gobierno Dominicano para el arreglo de la deuda y Juez de la Corte Permanente de La Haya en 1907.

- Enviado extraordinario y Ministro Plenipotenciario en Haití 1911 – 1913.

- Jefe de la Misión Especial enviada por el Gobierno Dominicano a Estados Unidos para zanjar dificultades con un funcionario norteamericano encargado del control financiero de la Hacienda Dominicana, con su gestión se logró suspender el control financiero.

- Delegado Dominicano a la Asamblea de Legislación Uniforme efectuada en Buenos Aires, Argentina en 1916.

- Nombrado por los factores políticos de su país como Presidente de la República Dominicana.

- De 1931 a 1932 fue nuevamente enviado como embajador extraordinario y plenipotenciario de su país a Haití y luego a Francia y Bélgica entre 1932 y 1933.

Onze twee groote, in de zeventiende eeuw tot stand gekomen organisaties voor het verkeer met vreemde werelddeelen hebben nog bij haar leven haar biografen gehad. Beeindigde echter Mr Pieter van Dam zijn beschrijving van de constitutie, de regeering en den handel der oost Indische Compagnie in 1701, bijna honderd jaar na haar stichting, Joannes de Laet gaf zijn Iaerlyck Verhael van de verrichtingen der Geoctroyeerde West Indische Compagnie in 1644 uit en behandelde in dedertien boeken zijner Historie de wederwaardigheden der in 1621 opgerichte maatschappij, waarvan de auteur zelf een der eerst bewindhebbers geweest was, slechts tot her jaar 1637.

Dutch West India Company (Dutch: Geoctroyeerde Westindische Compagnie or GWIC; English: Chartered West India Company) was a chartered company (known as the "GWC") of Dutch merchants. Among its founding fathers was Willem Usselincx (1567-1647?). On June 2, 1621, it was granted a charter for a trade monopoly in the West Indies (meaning the Caribbean) by the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands and given jurisdiction over the African slave trade, Brazil, the Caribbean, and North America.

José María Luis Mora Lamadrid (Chamacuero, Guanajuato, 12 de octubre de 1794 - París, Francia, 14 de julio de 1850), fue un sacerdote, político, ideólogo e historiador mexicano del siglo XIX. Considerado como uno de los primeros exponentes del liberalismo en México, pugnó por la separación Iglesia-Estado.

José María Luis Mora publicó Méjico y sus revoluciones en París, en 1836. La obra está compuesta por 3 volúmenes, con los siguientes temas: “Estado actual de México”, “Conquista y conspiraciones en la colonia tendientes a la emancipación” y “Guerra de Independencia hasta 1812”. Mora participó de la preocupación de los constructores del Estado mexicano por difundir una buena imagen del país, despojada de falsedades y exageraciones que limitaban la inserción en el contexto internacional. Para ello explica que el objetivo de su obra es: “…contribuir a fijar el juicio de los pueblos civilizados sobre esta parte interesante de nuestro continente, desengañándolos de los multiplicados errores en que los han imbuido las relaciones poco exactas de los viajeros, los resentimientos de algunos, y el entusiasmo exagerado de no pocos”. Al igual que todos los autores de obras históricas, nuestro autor, busca dar una visión objetiva, aunque reconoce que “pretender o exigir imparcialidad de un escritor contemporáneo es la mayor extravagancia…la historia contemporánea no es ni puede ser otra cosa que la relación de las impresiones que sobre el escritor, han hecho las cosas y las personas…”

La amistad entre el Gen. Lázaro Cárdenas (presidente de la república Mexicana, 1934-1940) y el Sr. Cameron Townsend (el fundador del Instituto Lingüístico de Verano) duró todo el tiempo que vivieron. Townsend escribió una biografía importante de la vida del Gen. Cárdenas, publicada en español (Lázaro Cárdenas: Demócrata mexicano, Editorial Grijalbo) y en inglés (Lazaro Cardenas: Mexican Democrat, 1952, George Wahr Publishing Company).

El libro fue aparentemente un regalo del traductor al Dr. Thomas Mathews, ya que le está dedicado en su letra.

The seed from which this book grew was planted in my mind many years ago when, in pursuit of knowledge about what is now called 'colonialism', I visited Hawaii and the Samoan islands and breathed an atmosphere in American dependencies very different from that in those belonging to Britain. The seed lay dormant until the second world war when, as a most pleasant and instructive interlude in an official mission to the British West Indies, I visited Puerto Rico. It

Eden Phillpotts (4 November 1862 – 29 December 1960) was an English author, poet and dramatist. He was born in India, educated in Plymouth, Devon, and worked as an insurance officer for 10 years before studying for the stage and eventually becoming a writer.[1] He was the author of many novels, plays and poems about Dartmoor. His Dartmoor cycle of 18 novels and two volumes of short stories still have many avid readers despite the fact that many titles are out of print. (...) Phillpotts was a friend of Agatha Christie, who was an admirer of his work and a regular visitor to his home. Jorge Luis Borges was another admirer.[2]

Dr. Tom Mathews left a note on page 135 that says "Claims he arrived on the island of Tobago in 1892; must have been published in 1893".

Cortés' personal account of the conquest of Mexico is narrated in his five letters addressed to Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor. These five letters, or cartas de relación, are Cortés's only surviving writings.
